"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"

covey_142"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is one of THE classics of management training. It's been a regular best-seller all over the world since its first release back in 1989. Author Stephen Covey seemed to hit something that resonated with people just at the moment when people were starting to realise the meaning of their own potential and take responsibility for developing it. Recently Stephen Covey published a sequel to the book called "The 8th Habit". So we thought it was time to put the spotlight on this classic of management training and take another look.

The Model at the Heart of The 7 Habits

The model at the heart of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is the idea that highly effective people have moved from being dependent on others through being dependent on themselves to being interdependent with others. Covey suggests that to make this journey, 7 principles, or habits, are needed. These are:

i. Be pro-active by taking response-ability.
ii. Start with the end in mind by knowing what your personal mission and vision are.
iii. Put first things first by spending time on the important things that will help you achieve your goals.
iv. Think Win-Win by adopting an abundance mentality not a scarcity mentality of I win and you lose.
v. Seek first to understand, then be understood, by understanding how the world looks from other people's viewpoint before you rush in with your own.
vi. Synergize, by working closely with others so that what you both bring adds up to more than the sum of each side.
vii. Sharpen the saw in order to maintain the source of all your effectiveness, You, - something you can do by further personal development and management training.

The Verdict on The 7 Habits

While many people dismiss the 7 Habits as an example of pop psychology under the cover of a management training product, there is no doubt that it has had an enormous impact down the years. Its sales alone have reached 10 million worldwide. Much of this is due to Covey's readable style and the now-familiar use of folksy anecdotes to support management training theories. The book has produced sequels with variations on the main theme applied to other groups such as teenagers, and families. There is so much in the original book that you can take just one idea, mull it over, apply it to your daily life, and see how it changes you. If the idea sticks, and takes you nearer your goals, then it is valid. Covey's success is surely that more of his ideas have stuck than those of many others.
