"The Power of Now"

An Overview of "The Power of Now"

"The Power of Now" is a book about following a modern path to enlightenment. It was written by Eckhart Tolle in the late 1990s and published with an initial printing of 3,000 copies. The book's growth accelerated in 2000 after Oprah Winfrey recommended it in her magazine, O. It has appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list and been translated into 33 languages. As of 2009, three million copies had been sold in North America.

About "The Power of Now"

There are four key themes in Eckhart Tolle's book, all of which update Buddhist, Zen and Taoist teachings to create a modern path to enlightenment:

1. The "ego" is controlled by the "mind" and is not who we really are.
2. Contrary to appearances, we are not separate entities but part of one unity whose nature is consciousness.
3. Time is an illusion which becomes clear when we learn to live wholly in the present.
4. Happiness doesn't come from external physical pleasures but from an inner state of being.
