MTL Motivators: Communications

In the "Communications" Motivators, you'll find some of the best quotes ever written about how to communicate with others. Read what Ralph Nichols says is the best way to understand others; why Doug Firebaugh says that communication is what we each get paid for; what Saskyia Pandita says is the greatest danger between people; why Ann McGee-Cooper says that parking the ego is the secret to dialogue; what Alan Webber says is the way knowledge is created in organisation; and why John Lubbock says that kind words are at the heart of communication. There are 100 slides in this lovely collection. Drop them into your formal Communications training when you coach and give feedback and you'll add a touch of class to your training.

"Communications" Motivators: Some of our Favourites

The following selections of quotes from this collection are some of our personal favourites. They're also perfect for some of the tricky alphabet letters in the game of "Alphabetter Quotes" that we'll give you below.

1. For a "J": "Coherent communication is based on four key principles:
1. Achieve understanding first
2. Listen non-judgmentally
3. Listen for the essence
4. Be authentic." (Doc Childre and Bruce Cryer)

2. For a "V": "It is very important to work hard and not talk about it.  We are often criticised for being too discrete.  But in the military, you never say anything unless it is to mislead the enemy." (Alfred Schindler)

3. For a "Q": "The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives." (Anthony Robbins)

4. For a "X": "Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family." (Virginia Satir)

5. For a "Z": "If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, where X is work, Y is play and Z is keep your mouth shut." (Albert Einstein 1879 - 1955)

"Communications" Motivators: "Alphabetter Quotes"

As well as using this selection of quotes to learn more about communications, you can also use them on any training course in the game of "Alphabetter Quotes". Here's how to do it.

Open your MTL "Communications" Motivators file on your computer and using the "Find" function, look for 26 quotes which have each of the letters of the alphabet from A to Z. Copy and paste your 26 quotes into a new file, making a note of which quote you've picked for which letter. Now for each quote blank out the letter in the quote so that it is no longer visible. Keep a note of which letter is missing from which quote. Now jumble up the quotes so that they are not in their normal alphabetical sequence, making sure that you keep a note of the missing letters. Print out enough copies of your 26 quotes for your trainees.

To play the game, hand out the exercise sheet with all 26 quotes on and tell your trainees that they have to put each of the letters of the alphabet into the missing blank spaces. The winner is the person (or team) that completes the list correctly in the quickest time.

If you are struggling with some of the trickier letters, look at our selection of quotes above.
